A growing share of your future customers will never see a page of Google results. They will ask an assistant “who should I call to install an EV charger in my garage” and get back three names. This page is about how to be one of those names. No agency retainer required, most of this you can do yourself.
How the AI actually picks
There is no secret directory. When someone asks an assistant for a local recommendation, the AI searches the open web, reads what it finds, and summarizes. ChatGPT’s search draws on Microsoft Bing’s index through OpenAI’s documented Microsoft partnership, and Google’s AI Overviews draw on Google’s index and business profiles. So the question “how do I rank in AI” mostly reduces to a familiar one: is your business clearly described, in text, in the places these systems read?
One important difference from old-school rankings: research firm Profound analyzed hundreds of thousands of ChatGPT conversations and found only 38% of pages cited by AI also ranked in Google’s top 10 for the same query. Translation: you do not have to out-rank the big lead sites to get named. Smaller, clearly written local pages get picked up all the time.
The checklist, in order of impact
Complete your Google Business Profile like it is a job application. Every field: services, service area, hours, license number, photos of real work, and a steady flow of reviews. This is the single strongest local signal for both map results and AI answers.
Give every service its own page, in plain words. A page that says “Panel upgrades in Bakersfield, permitted and inspected, here is what it costs and how long it takes” is something an AI can quote. A homepage that says “quality you can trust” is not about anything.
Keep your name, address, and phone identical everywhere. Your site, your profile, Yelp, the license board listing. Machines cross-check; mismatches read as doubt.
Add structured data to your site. Schema markup (the Electrician business type, your services, your area) is a label maker for machines. Most electrician sites do not have it, which makes it an easy edge.
Answer real questions on your site. Pages that directly answer what people ask (“how much does it cost to replace a panel”) are the exact shape AI answers are built from.
Be mentioned in places AI reads. Reviews, local directories, forum threads, news mentions. Assistants weigh what others say about you more than what you say about yourself.
What to ignore
Anyone guaranteeing you placement in AI answers is selling weather. The systems change monthly, nobody outside these companies controls the output, and paying someone to “submit you to the AIs” is paying for nothing: there is nothing to submit to. The work above is real; guarantees are not. Also skip keyword-stuffing and fake reviews. The license board and the platforms both punish the fakes, and AI systems increasingly weight signals that are hard to fake.
Why this is worth doing now
Because almost no electricians are doing it. Most trade websites were built years ago as brochures, with nothing a machine can confidently quote. Meanwhile the search behavior is shifting under everyone’s feet: 68% of US Google searches already end without a click on any website, per Similarweb data published by SparkToro, and assistants answer more of the remainder every month. The contractors who structure their presence now inherit the recommendations while competitors are still arguing about whether AI matters.
